“A good walk spoilt” is one description of the game of golf, and sometimes you can see why. A golf course is in essence a scenic piece of landscape with wide sweeping fairways to wander down; it is the frustration of trying to hit a small ball around it and into a series of hole that can be a cause for frustration.
And yet the worldwide popularity of this sport, which originated in Scotland, is evidence that it is an engrossing pastime, requiring both physical and mental discipline which keeps players and spectators alike coming back for more.
A where better to enjoy a golfing holiday than its historical home? Scotland not only offers the golf enthusiast literally hundreds of courses to choose from, including world class venues which regularly host international tournaments, but the chance to play in the footsteps of great golfers throughout the centuries.
The first recorded game of golf took place in 1456 at Bruntsfield Links in Edinburgh, details of which still survive in the archives of the Edinburgh Burgess Golfing Society, and even the name “golf” is thought to be derived from the old Scots word “goulf” meaning “to strike or cuff”. The oldest playing golf course in the world is The Musselburgh Old Links Golf Course in East Lothian, and there is evidence that golf was played there since1672 as well as a legend at least that as early as 1567, Mary, Queen of Scots played a round.
So for golfers who want to return to the roots of the game, Scotland is certainly the right place to go.
Another way of getting involved with the games historty is by looking for or purchasing memorabilia. Memorabilia can be a great way to remember how the game was first started and how it developed and especially remember all the glorious moments of the game.
